New Tool: Choose Your PHP Version

downloadBack in May we released a blog post about updates on the versions of PHP we have available on our servers with the introduction of PHP 5.3 to our server fleet. We are happy to announce a new tool in our cPanel which allows you to choose the PHP version of your account as well as the introduction of PHP version 5.4 on our systems.

How can I enable this feature?

Login to cPanel and under Software and Services, click on “Select PHP version”. You can then choose from either the native version of PHP of your server, or version 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4. PHP version 5.5 will be available when it comes out of alpha testing.

We are always looking to improve the technology available on our servers to our customers. If you have a feature that you would like to see on our servers, we would love to hear it in the comment section of this post. As always, if you have any questions about this new feature, our support team is here for you 24×7 to answer any questions you may have.

Top 5 SEO Tips to Help You Rank Higher

google-bing-yahoo-08-24-101Customers ask us all the time about how to get their site at a higher ranking in Google. These days, most people discover new sites by finding them in search engines like Google or Yahoo. The process of improving your ranking in these search engines is called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. Here are a few ways to improve your search engine ranking:

1. Use the GreenGeeks Search Engine Optimization Tools

Included in the GreenGeeks control panel is a set of tools for search engine submission and optimization  Simply log in to cPanel and click the “SEO tools” icon. This set of tools submits your site to search engines, can help you with link building, check your site against blacklists, and much more!

2. Make sure all of your pages are named

Use the <title> tag to ensure all of your pages have a descriptive title. This will help search engines determine all of the content your site has to offer. For example, if your page is about the dog grooming service that you offer in the Los Angeles, you may put a title such as: Professional Dog Grooming in Los Angeles.

3. Use descriptive links on your page

Instead of linking to informational pages by saying click here, link to informational pages by making it more fluent. For example, GreenGeeks offers exceptional Green Energy Web Hosting. Search engines use links to help determine what content your site has, so using descriptive links will help improve your SEO. Remember, it needs to read natural otherwise Google may take it as being spam, which will hurt your SEO.

4. Add alternate text for images

Make sure that your images utilize the ALT tag or if you’re using a content management system like WordPress, add a description. Search engines cannot see images, so describing the images will enable them to be picked up.

5. Design your site in an organized way

In the end, a well designed and organized website tends to rank higher in search engines. Using a content management system like WordPress or Drupal will help you achieve a clean and easily optimized site. These tools also have many SEO plugins to help you get the most out of search engine optimization.
